After sending mixed messages in the hours leading up to his scheduled "international burn a Koran day,"
Florida pastor Terry jones said late Friday that his congregation (All forty of them) had called off their planned book bonfire.
"We feel that god is telling us to stop,"
Jones said in an interview on the today show Saturday morning.
The Quran burnings were scheduled to take place at the dove world outreach center in Gainesville,Florida at 6:00 P.M. EDT
Jones is reportedly scheduled to meet with the spiritual leader of a controversial ground zero mosque in New York city, although details of that meeting have yet to be confirmed.
U.S. Officials including President Barack Obama have rebuked jones for several days over his planned Quran burning. Secretary of defense Robert gates even called jones personally and asked him to hold off on his threat.
Previously, the U.S. Commander in Afghanistan Gen. David petraeus said that jones' Quran burning would endanger Americans soldiers overseas. The idea that "we would burn the sacred texts of someone else's religion is contrary to what this country stands for," Obama said Friday.
Obama supports the ground zero mosque, however having already expressed our thoughts on this matter, we're frankly ready for it to vanish from the national stage.
