Norwegian mass killer took drugs

Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik took drugs to make him 'strong and efficient' during the bombing and shooting spree which killed at least 76 people.
His lawyer also said he appeared to be a madman.
'This whole case indicated that he is insane,' Geir Lippestad said of Anders Breivik, who has confessed to 'atrocious but necessary' actions, but denies he is a criminal.
The lawyer said it was too early to say if 32-year-old Breivik would plead insanity at his trial, expected to be a year away.
He added that Breivik also believes the killings were justified because he was in 'war'.
‘He is sorry he had to do this but it was necessary to start the revolution in the Western world,’ he said.
Lippestad said Breivik had stated he belonged to an anti-Islam network that has two cells in Norway and more abroad.
Norwegian police and researchers have cast doubt on whether such an organisation exists.
'He talks about two cells in Norway, but several cells abroad,' said Lippestad.
Police believe Breivik probably acted alone in staging his bloody assaults. They have also revealed he is on 'suicide watch' and it will take two more weeks to search for missing bodies off the island of Utoya.
Lippestad added that Breivik was a cold person with no sign of empathy. He has no idea of the march by 150,000 in Oslo or the strength of revulsion against him.
He added the gunman was ‘surprised’ to have reached Utoya island so easily on Friday, when he carried out his attack on a Labour party youth camp.

The death toll for both attacks currently stands at 76, with many others still officially missing.
Lippestad is a Labour Party lawyer who was chosen by Breivik because they worked in the same building 15 years ago.
He was not planning to read the 1,500 manifesto that accompanied the killings and could not comment on reports Breivik had been to London last year or taken part in marches.

Breivik was currently ‘very tired’ because of ‘his special situation’ but was only being questioned in regular daytime sessions.
He was co-operating fully with the police, although he would not give any further details about the terror cells abroad. He believed there would be other attacks.
Breivik also had a view of the world which was difficult to explain, Lippestad said.
‘He believes in war you can do things like that without guilt.’
His family had not requested to see him and he had neither seen nor heard any media reports.
His lawyer said 'He is in a bubble’. In response to a question on whether Breivik would think things are going to plan he added: ‘I think so.’
When asked he said it was difficult to describe his client.
He had met him three times over the past few days for many hours and estimated it would take six to 12 months before reaching trial.
He was considering a defence of insanity.
If he decided on that course of action and Breivik was unhappy with that, he would have to find another lawyer, he said.

In another development, Justice Minister Knut Storberget hailed 'fantastic' police work after the attacks, deflecting criticisms that police had reacted too slowly to the shooting massacre.
'It is very important that we have an open and critical approach...but there is a time for everything,' Storberget told reporters after talks with Oslo's police chief.
An armed SWAT team took more than an hour to reach Utoeya island, where Breivik was coolly shooting terrified youngsters at a ruling Labour Party youth camp. He killed 68 there and eight in an earlier bombing of Oslo's government district.
Police are likely to release the names of the victims on Tuesday, a day after they revised the death toll down to 76 from 93, the NTB news agency said.
Storberget also denied police had ignored threats posed by right-wing zealots in Norway. 'I reject suggestions that we have not had the far-right under the microscope,' he said.

Many Norwegians seem to agree the police do not deserve opprobrium for their response. At a march of more than 100,000 in Oslo on Monday night, people applauded rescue workers.
Breivik, 32, told a judge at his custody hearing on Monday that two other cells in his "organisation" existed.
However, a source close to the investigation said: 'We feel that the accused has fairly low credibility when it comes to this claim but none of us dare to be completely dismissive about it either.'

Researchers also doubt Breivik's claim that he is part of a wider far-right network of anti-Islam 'crusaders', seeing it as bragging by a psychopathic fantasist who has written that exaggeration is a way to sow confusion among investigators.
Norway has felt some relief that Breivik seems to have acted alone in trying to save Europe from 'cultural Marxism' and a 'Muslim invasion' by striking at the ruling Labour Party.
Storberget told Reuters television that Norway had received a 'hard lesson' but would remain an open and free democracy, even as it made unspecified changes to improve security.
There would be, he said, 'more openness, more political activity, a better democracy, more safety for the people, but we have to come back to the concrete measures for that'.
The Aftenposten daily said Breivik's interrogation was moving slowly, with the confessed killer silent on his claims about sleeper cells or other potential collaborators.
Prosecutors will consider whether Breivik's acts fall under a 2008 law on crimes against humanity, said Staale Eskeland, professor of criminal law at Oslo University.
'To kill a group of civilians systematically is the basic criteria' for charges of crimes against humanity, he said, adding that the maximum penalty for this offence was 30 years in jail, rather than 21 years under the anti-terrorism law.
In both cases the sentence can be extended for up to five years at a time if there is risk of repeat offences.
So far Breivik has been charged with 'destabilising or destroying basic functions of society' and 'creating serious fear in the population'. Police attorney Christian Hatlo has said Breivik expects to spend the rest of his life in jail.
It is understood Breivik could be held in the £150 million Halden prison near Oslo, which is one of the most luxurious jails in the world.
Despite housing some of Norway's most dangerous criminals, including murderers, paedophiles and rapists, it has all the facilities found in a high-class hotel.
It is spread over 75 acres of peaceful woodland, and includes jogging routes outside, gym including climbing walls, and a two-bedroom house for prisoners to stay with their families for several nights away from the main building.
Opened by King Harold V last year, unarmed guards play games, watch TV and eat meals with prisoners in a bid to reform them.
Each inmate gets a private cell with mini-fridge, flat-screen TV and even a private en-suite bathroom and barless windows - because they let in more sunlight.
More than 100,000 Norwegians rallied in Oslo on Monday night, many carrying white and red roses, to mourn the dead and to show unity after July 22. Tens of thousands of others rallied in other cities from Tromso to Bergen.

In signs that police are sceptical that Breivik was part of a wider network, border controls imposed on July 22 were lifted late on Monday. Norway has not asked other countries to launch probes, nor has it raised the threat level for terrorism.
Even the final entry in Breivik's own 1,500 page manifesto says on July 22: 'The old saying: 'if you want something done, then do it yourself' is as relevant now as it was then.'
'Intuitively, it feels like he is alone when you read the document. It's like he's lost in this made-up world and can't distinguish between fantasy and reality," said Magnus Ranstorp, Research Director at the Centre for Asymmetric Threat Studies at the Swedish National Defence College.
'They (mass killers) are usually alone,' he said.
Another researcher said Breivik was disconnected from his victims. 'He has no empathy, he is indifferent to the people he kills, he has no conscience and no remorse,' said Ragnhild Bjoernebekk, a researcher at Norway's police school.
Police defended themselves from suggestions that some alarm bells should have rung about Breivik. The PST security police say Breivik's name appeared only once, on an Interpol list of 50 to 60 Norwegians, after he paid £11 to a Polish chemicals firm on a watch list. They found no reason to react.

Singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her house in north London She was 27. The award-winning artist, famous for hits including Rehab from the critically acclaimed album Back to Black, was discovered by police in the late afternoon. Her death was being treated on Saturday night as "unexplained" but sources said she had died of a drugs overdose.

The Metropolitan police said: "We were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square shortly before 16.05hrs following reports of a woman found deceased. On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene."

Winehouse was last seen with her goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, earlier last week when the teenager performed at the iTunes festival.

Tributes began to pour in to one of the most celebrated and troubled British artists of recent times. Mark Ronson, who produced Back to Black, said: "She was my musical soulmate and like a sister to me. This is one of the saddest days of my life."

Singer and actress Kelly Osbourne wrote: "i cant even breath right now, im crying so hard i just lost 1 of my best friends. i love you forever Amy and  will never forget the real you!"

    soobest

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood dedicated his show on Absolute Radio and the reunion performance by his former group the Faces in Hurtwood, Surrey, to Winehouse. "It's a very sad loss of a very good friend I spent many great times with," he said.

Two regulars at Winehouse's local pub, The Hawley Arms in Camden, paid tribute. "Some people might think it shows disrespect to come out drinking tonight but she was such a part of Camden she made it her home and she always got involved," said Mary Gallagher. "Amy even worked behind the bar here. She was such a lovely person and, to be honest, I don't think fame agreed with her. She was an ordinary girl at heart."

Gloria Woods, 26, who works for a record label, said: "There will never be another voice like that in our generation."

A spokesman for the late singer said: "Everyone involved with Amy is shocked and devastated. Our thoughts are with her family and friends."

Winehouse's father, Mitch, returned from New York, where he had been due to perform at the Blue Note jazz club. He said: 'I'm coming home. I have to be with Amy. I can't crack up for her sake. My family need me."
Flowers, teddy bears and candles were left outside her home in Camden Square. One card read: "You will not be forgotten by Camden. We all love you and will continue to love you. Your legend lives on."

Winehouse had suffered a well-publicised battle with drink and drug abuse that saw her withdraw from all of her scheduled performances last month after a series of erratic performances. She started her 12-leg European tour in Belgrade but was booed off the stage after appearing to forget her lyrics. She then pulled out of performances in Istanbul and Athens before she cancelled the tour as fears for her health grew.

A statement released by her spokesman at the time said that she would be given "as long as it takes" to recover. "Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best," it read.

Winehouse rose to fame with her debut album Frank in 2003, which was feted by music critics in the UK and nominated for the Mercury music prize, but it was her 2006 follow-up album, Back to Black, that catapulted her to stardom and led to five Grammy awards. The album became the third-highest selling album of the 2000s.

9 Secrets Men Keep From Women

    Your Ad Here

Ever wish you could delve into the male mind to figure out what he’s really thinking? For ages, women have tried to interpret “guy-psyche” — why he didn’t he call; why he did call you by his ex’s name. But every man is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all explanation for guys’ cryptic tendencies. However, research has found a number of surprising parallels. From his fears of commitment to his fondness for cuddling, certain emotions cause many men to freeze up rather than open up. Here are the top secrets guys keep (and why).

He Loves You, He Loves You Not

Those “three little words” could be the most complex in the English language. While some men prematurely pull the trigger on the "L word" (a recent study from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that guys tend to say “I love you” first, often driven by the idea that their partner will be more likely to have sex with them) — other guys just aren’t that good at getting the words out. Instead, they show their love through their actions. How can you know for sure? Those actions may be a truer indicator of his feelings than any passion-fueled colloquy, says Irina Firstein, LCSW, a relationship counselor who has advised couples in New York City for more than 20 years.

    He Has Cold Feet

Men often have a harder time picking up on subtle relationship cues — and because of this, your man may not be aware of the point in which your bond has moved to a higher expectation of commitment. In fact, some guys get anxious about becoming attached, even if they seem to enjoy the relationship. "Men often 'rubber band,' withdraw, or pull back if they feel like the relationship has moved beyond their comfort zone," Firstein notes. This new territory can take a man by surprise — even if you felt like he was forging ahead at the same pace you were.

    He Gets Performance Jitters

Do men think about sex a lot? Sure they do, but their fears of sexual inadequacy may be just as frequent. If a man has ever had an unsuccessful go at sex (and most of them have! — flopped romps can be triggered by common missteps such as drinking too much), his stress in the bedroom can stockpile — which can eventually lead to sexual dysfunction. Many men will even avoid sex rather than talk honestly about their fears with their partner, and this can harm both the sexual health and the emotional health of a relationship.

    He's Not Crazy About Monogamy

Some men stay mum about the extent of their sexual desires. "Freedom, and particularly sexual freedom, and variety are typically more important to men than to women,” says Firstein. “Many married men feel that they love their wives and, at the same time, have no problems cheating." This difference between men and women can be one of the most damaging to a couple because of the sense of betrayal it can create (even if he never actually strays).

He Wants You to Initiate Sex (and Cuddling)

You may think sexual desire is hard-wired in men, but with every attempt at turning you on comes a threat of rejection — even in the most established relationships. That’s why it’s such a turn-on when a woman makes the moves, allowing him to skip the risk altogether. And it’s not just sex he wants: One recent study from the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University actually found that cuddling and caressing in a relationship are more important to men than women. Next time, be the sexual pioneer — it could strengthen the health of your relationship more than you realize.

    He's Depressed

Depression has no gender bias: It can strike anyone, including the most macho of men. However, studies show that men who are depressed are less likely to open up about their sadness or lack of energy than women. Instead, they are more likely to avoid sex, say they’re overtired, or drink more. "Some men are uncomfortable about feeling sad, and their sadness or depression may come out as anger," warns Firstein. Depression is one of the most dangerous secrets a man can keep, so if you think a male in your life could be depressed, it’s important to let him know that you’re concerned.

He Suppresses (Instead of Addresses) Doubt

Some men are instilled with the notion that they shouldn’t show signs of fear or doubt; eventually, those doubts and fears can snowball into big secrets, ones they may keep even from themselves. But when his undisclosed apprehensions involve his relationship — whether it’s about getting married or bringing you along to “guys’ night” — both partners’ emotional health is at risk. "Men may postpone a marriage engagement as long as possible and then propose because they think it is the right thing to do,” Firstein says. “They frequently get anxious or distant right before a wedding because they have not fully dealt with their doubts or fears."

He Feels Afraid of His Own Feelings

Doubt isn’t the only emotion men stay hush-hush about — in fact, some guys have a hard time opening up about a range of feelings. "Because many men are problem solvers and are uncomfortable talking about feelings, there are a number of intense feelings that don't get expressed with words, but rather acted out," notes Firstein. The good news? Men aren’t Neanderthals. The emotions are there; they just need to be uncovered. And if ‘fessing up about his feelings remains a stumbling block, he may need to seek relationship advice from a professional.

And the Biggest Secret Men Keep…

Here’s a fact: Men need (and want) intimacy just as much as women do. Mutual respect, trust, support, and communication — these relationship musts are just as important for a man's emotional and sexual health as they are for a woman's. When both partners are able to open up and let their relationship develop at its own pace, that love will be nurtured by positivity — rather than stunted by secrets.

Kim Kardashian sues Old Navy over lookalike in ads

    CA Disk MD

Kim Kardashian wants Old Navy to stop using a lookalike to advertise its clothing.
    Sid Meier's Civilization V
The reality show starlet and model on Wednesday sued the clothing store and its parent company, The Gap Inc., in a Los Angeles federal court alleging their ads violated her publicity rights with ads that feature a woman who looks like her.

A video of a broadcast ad featuring a smiling, dark-haired woman who bears a resemblance to the real Kardashian has been viewed more than two million times on Old Navy's YouTube channel.
Kardashian's lawsuit claims consumers may be confused by the ads and the model's actual endorsements, which include her own clothing store and shoe line. A commercial, titled, "Super C-U-T-E," began airing in February and Old Navy is still using some of the promotions, the lawsuit states.

    AliExpress by Alibaba.com

The case cites all the benchmarks of modern celebrity: her eight million followers on Twitter, more than five million fans on Facebook and ranking as one of the most searched-for celebrities on the Internet.

Kardashian "has invested substantial time, energy, finances and entrepreneurial effort in developing her considerable professional and commercial achievements and success, as well as in developing her popularity, fame, and prominence in the public eye," the lawsuit states.

Louise Callagy, a spokeswoman for San Francisco-based Gap said the company has not yet seen the case and had no comment.

Kardashian, 31, has rocketed to fame in recent years after gaining prominence as a friend of Paris Hilton and for having a sex tape. She appears along with her family on the E! Entertainment Television series "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and routinely graces magazine covers.

Her lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages and wants a federal judge to prevent Old Navy from using a Kardashian lookalike model in its ads again.

    Great Products. Great Prices.

The model in the ads, Melissa Molinaro, is not named in the lawsuit. She expressed exasperation that the resemblance was being pointed out again.

"Were (sic) still talking about this," she posted on Twitter, noting the ad ran five months ago. "Some people have too much time on (their) hands."

Did this nurse murder three patients?

The nurse accused of killing three patients with contaminated drips wrote of how she loved to party and dreaded working nights.
Rebecca Leighton was arrested in a dawn raid at the small flat she shares with her fiancé and was being questioned by detectives last night.
Known as Becki, the 27-year-old works at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport where her mother, Lynda, is understood to be a nurse training manager.
She is being held on suspicion of the murders there of George Keep, 84, Arnold Lancaster, 71, and Tracey Arden, 44.
Another suspected poisoning victim, a man in his early 40s, remains seriously ill.
Leighton – who documented her frantic social life and drinking on Facebook – is being quizzed about insulin which detectives believe was deliberately injected into 36 vials of saline solution to kill or harm patients.
Post-mortem examination results on the three who died are understood to have been inconclusive.

Police have stressed that proving a link between their deaths and the suspected insulin poisoning is likely to be a slow and complex process.
Teams of plain-clothed forensics experts in unmarked pick-up trucks spent the day searching both her flat and the darts shop below, which belongs to her fiancé Tim Papworth, 28.

The officers later left the flat with about six black bags and a computer and hard drive. The hospital is a 15-minute walk away on the busy A6.
Mrs Leighton, 55, is understood to train nurses at Stepping Hill and is described as extremely caring. Her husband David, 60, is a coach driver who has worked with the Manchester City football team.

Neighbour Frank Eaton, an 83-year-old widower, said: ‘They are a lovely couple. ‘When I lost my wife Jean recently, Lynda came round every night for weeks to make sure I was all right. But she’s like that, she’s in the caring profession.
Another neighbour said: ‘Lynda is quite high up at the hospital. She is a manager at Stepping Hill training nurses. Her daughter followed her into the profession – they are both very caring people.’

The hospital contacted police last Tuesday after an experienced nurse reported a higher than normal number of patients with ‘unexplained’ low blood sugar levels. Fourteen received dangerous levels of insulin from contaminated saline.
Security at the hospital has been increased with only authorised keyholders having access to drugs and medics working in pairs to minimise the chance of foul play.
These measures are expected to remain in place over the coming days.
In addition, ambulances bringing patients for emergency treatment have been diverted to other hospitals which have been warned to be vigilant to any ‘unusual events or patterns’.
Dorothy Potter, an elderly patient treated on the ward where saline was contaminated, said she had not been concerned about her care.

Speaking to the BBC, she called the nurses brilliant and absolutely wonderful, night and day. Asked how she felt about the revelations, she added: ‘I feel very disappointed for everybody really.’
Leighton is facing swift suspension by the Nursing and Midwifery Council – a standard move in such cases.
Last night chief executive Professor Dickon Weir-Hughes said: ‘We have commenced fitness to practise proceedings with a view to suspending her from the register as quickly as possible.’
Dr Chris Burke, chief executive of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust said: ‘As the police are continuing with their inquiries we are unable to provide any further details, but it is important to stress that no charge has been made at this stage.’
Police have said their priority is to track down and charge the suspected saboteur after which they will examine whether he or she was also responsible for previous deaths at the hospital.

    Rebecca Leighton’s Facebook pages

Rebecca Leighton’s Facebook pages tell of a frantic social life that helped her cope with the stress of work.
Last month she wrote on the social networking site: ‘Worst night’s sleep ever last nite, now for 14 hr shift aggghhhhhhh’ and ‘really really don’t want to go to work’.
In another post she put: ‘Bad bad day follow(ed) by wine is a must.’

In one picture, Leighton is seen downing a bottle of wine.

She adds: ‘Well what can i say, im a happy go lucky kinda gal, loves the wkend (if im not workin) and having a laugh with the people that i call friends [sic] for a reason.’

She describes her job as ‘NHS staff nurse’, but adds, ‘god it hard work x’.

The page is littered with entries about not looking forward to work – in one, posted two weeks ago, she wrote: ‘Back to work in the morn’ followed by an unhappy face symbol.

Ahead of one work night out, she wrote: ‘Oh what will tonight bring... drunken nurses!’

Last Friday – the day after police were called in – she posted: ‘This is what it’s all about’.

It was her first entry in a week and referred to how she was enjoying ‘food, DVD and monkey’ – her nickname for fiancé, Tim Papworth, 28, who runs a darts shop.

Her previous posting – simply the word ‘shattered’ – was posted on the evening of July 8, the day after the death of Tracey Arden, the first suspected poisoning victim.

On July 2, she was pictured smiling and surrounded by friends at a leaving party enjoying drinks and partying.

At a convenience store near her Stockport home, proprietor Hamid Bayatpoor, 47, said: ‘She comes in all the time in her nurse’s uniform and buys wine and cigarettes – Echo Falls rosé and packets of 20 or 40 Mayfair.

‘At the weekend she comes in all dressed up, wearing a party dress.

‘She’s a very nice girl, always laughing and smiling – I’m very surprised she’s been arrested.’

Leighton grew up in Stockport, attending Priestnall High School. She then completed an Open University nursing course following in the footsteps of her mother Lynda at Stepping Hill.

Family friend Frank Eaton, 83, said: ‘She’s very polite and very pleasant, she followed her mum into the profession.’

On Facebook, Leighton frequently complained about having to go to work, claiming she was drained after long shifts, night shifts and overtime.

And in a posting illustrating the strain she feels, she writes on January 17: ‘Becki Leighton… Seriously needs to sort her head out, slowly crumbling.’

Last month, she posted: ‘Really really don’t want to go to work :( xx’ follwed by ‘Drained is not the word :(‘

On May 30, she wrote: ‘Becki Leighton… is wondering what’s round the corner :)’

In postings punctuated with smiley faces and exclamation marks, she also discloses details of boozy evenings and weekends with her friends.

In October last year, she writes: ‘Becki Leighton… thinks 2nite is guna end up messy’.

On February 11, at 3.34am, she writes: ‘Oh what will tonight bring...... Drunken nurses!!!!!! :)’

Later, she writes: ‘Let the alcohol filled wkend begin’ followed by a posting about ‘messy times with my Girlies tonite’.

Last night the blinds at her parents’ £175,000 three-bedroom semi-detached home were shut and there was no answer at the door.

A neighbour in the Denton district of Greater Manchester, said: ‘I’m absolutely stunned. It has left me in total shock.

‘I can’t believe Becki would get mixed up in anything of the sort.

‘She is a lovely girl, polite and caring like her mother, and it is the last thing you would expect of a nurse. Everyone won’t believe me when I tell them.’

Her brother Darren, a mechanic, is on a round-the-world trip after being made redundant from his engineering job at Renault.

A friend said: ‘He’ll be devastated to hear this. It will leave him in shock.’

Top 10 Bad Things That Are Good For You

    Sex

Scientists have found that the benefits of sex go beyond immediate, ahem, gratification and satisfying the goal of procreation. Besides the obvious evolutionary purposes, we can all take pleasure in the news that having sex is an easy way to reduce stress, lower cholesterol and improve circulation throughout the body. As if you needed another excuse.

    Chocolate

Chocolate lovers rejoice: study after study lately has touted the magical benefits of the indulgent treat, which is packed with the antioxidant flavonols that prevent certain cancers and keep your arteries from clogging. The most recent news? These powerful chemicals may even increase blood flow to the brain, warding off dementia. Just stick to the highest cocoa content possible-the bars packed with sugar don't help your health one bit.

    Red Wine

A crucial ingredient in the diets of the world's heart-healthiest populations-like those Bordeaux-guzzling French-red wine has long been known to have potent anti-cancer and artery-protecting benefits. The key, some studies indicate, is an antioxidant found specifically in the skin of red wine grapes, called resveratrol. The latest studies even link resveratrol to greater endurance, a reduction in gum disease and Alzheimer's. White wine, which is fermented after the skins are removed, is less beneficial according to some studies.

    Marijuana

It's medicinal, we swear! Marijuana, often associated with memory loss, is ironically now being hyped as a way to stave off the ultimate form of memory loss: Alzheimer's. Recent studies on mice suggest that anti-inflammatories found in the drug prevent the clumping of brain proteins, one major cause of the disease. So when should you start preventative therapy? We suggest waiting for the human studies to wrap up.

    Maggots

They're creepy, slimy and altogether ooky, but maggots can save your life. These squirmy larvae are science's newest wonder-cure and were approved in 2003 as the Food & Drug Administration's only live medical device. Placed on serious wounds, maggots mimic their "wild" lifestyle and munch on bacteria and dead tissue, stimulating healing and helping to prevent infection.

    Sunlight

Exposure to the sun's rays is necessary to survive, but can also kill you in gross, cancerous quantities. Asthmatics, at least, could benefit from measured doses of ultraviolet rays, according to scientists. Sunlight suppressed the immune reactions that cause asthma in some lab studies with mice and could be used to treat humans afflicted with the disease in the future. And sunlight-even if indirect, such as on a shaded porch-is known to boost the mood. Extra sunlight can help office workers avoid afternoon drowsiness, a recent study found. There's still no excuse to head outside and bake, however.

    Valued Opinions

    LSD

We're definitely not in the business of advocating drug use. But check out this interesting science: In heavy drinkers, small doses of LSD have been thought to help bypass the rock-bottom stage of alcoholism and prevent relapses. These studies-some decades old-were done in closely monitored, clinical settings; many patients haven't had a drink in the many years since. It's an interesting finding that needs a lot more investigation, and not a remedy that should ever be tried at home. Meantime, and this may come as no surprise, recent study of 36 volunteers who took an LSD-like drug in a lab setting had them reporting mystical experiences and behavior changes that lasted for weeks.

    Coffee

Java is one of the most debated substances around. Is it good for you? Is it bad for you? Both? The consensus, now anyways, seems to favor those who enjoy their morning jolt-unrelated studies claim coffee is a major source of antioxidants in our diet and can help lower your risk of diabetes. Something in the beans is also thought to ease the onset of cirrhosis of the liver and pancreatitis, good news for those who like to party hard all night before their morning caffeine boost.

    Anger

if you're one of those people who tends to bottle things up, only to explode ... don't hold it in so long. Studies show that bursts of anger here and there are good for the health, and can be an even more effective coping mechanism than becoming afraid, irritated or disgusted. Anger, like the consumables in this list, however, is best in moderation: stay angry for long periods of time and you'll be plagued with a host of health issues, like blood pressure, sleep disorders and lung damage.

    Beer

The newest bad kid on the block, beer has long been overshadowed by its healthier alcoholic cousins. While no one's suggesting you switch that glass of antioxidant-rich Pinot Noir for a tall glass of lager-there's still that beer gut to worry about-new research has suggested that moderate beer intake can actually improve cardiovascular function. Now if only a scientist will discover the health benefits of ballpark franks and chicken wings. Heaven.

5 Health Benefits of Smoking

Who says smoking cigarettes is so bad ... well, aside from the World Health Organization, Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and every medical board and association on the face of the Earth?

But should smokers be fortunate enough to dodge all that cancer, heart disease, emphysema and the like, they will be uniquely protected — for reasons unexplained by science — against a handful of diseases and afflictions.

Call it a silver lining in their otherwise blackened lungs. Although long-term smoking is largely a ticket to early death, here are (gulp) five possible benefits from smoking. Breathe deep.

    1. Smoking lowers risk of knee-replacement surgery

While smokers might go broke buying a pack of cigarettes, they can at least save money by avoiding knee-replacement surgery. Surprising results from a new study have revealed that men who smoke had less risk of undergoing total joint replacement surgery than those who never smoked.

The study, from the University of Adelaide in Australia, appears in the July issue of the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism. What could be the connection? Knee-replacement surgery was more common among joggers and the obese; smokers rarely jog, and they are less likely to be morbidly obese.

After controlling for age, weight and exercise, the researchers were at a loss to explain the apparent, albeit slight protective effects of smoking for osteoporosis. It could be that the nicotine in tobacco helps prevent cartilage and joint deterioration.

    2. Smoking lowers risk of Parkinson's disease

Numerous studies have identified the uncanny inverse relationship between smoking and Parkinson's disease. Long-term smokers are somehow protected against Parkinson's, and it's not because smokers die of other things earlier. [10 Easy Paths to Self-Destruction]

The most recent, well-conducted study was published in a March 2010 issue of the journal Neurology. Far from determining a cause for the protective effect, these researchers found that the number of years spent smoking, more so than the number of cigarettes smoked daily, mattered more for a stronger protective effect.

Harvard researchers were among the first to provide convincing evidence that smokers were less likely to develop Parkinson's. In a study published in Neurology in March 2007, these researchers found the protective effect wanes after smokers quit. And they concluded, in their special scientific way, that they didn't have a clue as to why.

    3. Smoking lowers risk of obesity

Smoking — and, in particular, the nicotine in tobacco smoke — is an appetite suppressant. This has been known for centuries, dating back to indigenous cultures in America in the pre-Columbus era. Tobacco companies caught on by the 1920s and began targeting women with the lure that smoking would make them thinner.

A study published in the July 2011 issue of the journal Physiology & Behavior, in fact, is one of many stating that the inevitable weight gain upon quitting smoking is a major barrier in getting people to stop, second only to addiction.

The relationship between smoking and weight control is complex: Nicotine itself acts as both a stimulant and appetite suppressant; and the act of smoking triggers behavior modification that prompts smokers to snack less. Smoking also might make food less tasty for some smokers, further curbing appetite. As an appetite suppressant, nicotine appears to act on a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, at least in mice, as revealed in a study by Yale researchers published in the June 10, 2011, issue of the journal Science.

No respectable doctor would recommend smoking for weight control, given the toxic baggage accompanying cigarettes. This recent Yale study, however, does offer an inkling of hope for a safe diet drug to help obese people control their appetites.

    4. Smoking lowers risk of death after some heart attacks

Compared with non-smokers, smokers who have had heart attacks seem to have lower mortality rates and more favorable responses to two kinds of therapy to remove plaque from their arteries: fibrinolytic therapy, which is basically medication; and angioplasty, which removes the plaque by inserting balloons or stents into the arteries.

There's a catch, though. The reason why smokers have heart attacks is that smoke scars the arteries, allowing fat and plaque to build up in the first place. So, one theory as to why smokers do better than non-smokers after such therapies is that they are younger, experiencing their first heart attack approximately 10 years before the non-smoker.

A study published in an August 2005 issue of the American Heart Journal, however, states that age alone is not enough to fully explain the survival differences and that "the smoker's paradox is alive and well." No alternative theories have been put forth since.

    5. Smoking helps the heart drug clopidogrel work better

Clopidogrel is a drug used to inhibit blood clots for those patients suffering from coronary artery disease and other circulatory diseases leading to strokes and heart attacks. Smoking seems to help clopidogrel do its job better.

A study by Korean researchers in the October 2010 issue of the journal Thrombosis Research builds upon work by Harvard researchers published in 2009 that demonstrates the benefit of smoking at least 10 cigarettes a day. It seems that something in cigarette smoke activates certain proteins called cytochromes, which convert clopidogrel into a more active state.

Again, no respectable doctor is encouraging patients to start smoking to get the most out of clopidogrel. But this and the other four "benefits" of smoking reveal how tobacco — perhaps not unlike other potentially toxic plants — might contain certain chemicals of real therapeutic value.

She takes on the role of a sex starved dentist in her new film and at the photo-call for the premiere Jennifer Aniston opted for something a little racy in keeping with her character.
The 42-year-old actress - who is in London for the premiere of Horrible Bosses - stepped out in a simple yet seductive black leather dress.
The star, who is best known for playing Rachel Green in Friends, accessorised in a pair of strappy sandals and a two bracelets on her left wrist.

Jennifer showed off an inking, seen on the inside of her right foot, which is a tribute to her dog Norman, who passed away in May.
Jennifer joined co-stars Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Jason Bateman and Kevin Spacey who star in the comedy.
The cast will be attending the premiere for the film at BFI Southbank later this evening.
Speaking about her role as Dr Julia Harris, who blackmails her male assistant, she told The Sun: ‘It was great fun and very liberating to throw myself into this character.’

‘You feel totally uninhibited and get to explore your weirdest and kinkiest psychological quirks and just exaggerate all the kinds of flirtatious ideas and fantasies you've ever had.
‘You get to enjoy being fearless when you play a character that is so brazen and domineering.’
Earlier this month Jennifer was inducted into the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and her new boyfriend Justin Theroux was front row to support his leading lady.

Although she kept him hidden while she walked the red carpet at last Thursday's Horrible Bosses premiere in Los Angeles, Justin was pride of place at the drinks later that night.
After meeting up inside the premiere, the couple spent an hour and a half at the after-party before heading to the Chateau Marmont to meet friends, including her Courteney Cox.
An onlooker told People magazine: 'They were super cute. He had his arm around her and kissed her on her cheek. They were whispering in each other's ears.'
